About Artist in the Community
Established in April 2007 Artist in the Community is an arts project offering innovative, unique, creative exciting and fun arts interventions to schools, nurseries, children’s centres, youth projects, community groups and special needs organisations across the North East of England.
Its founder, Susan Warlock is an established North East based artist and professional storyteller with over thirty years experience working within community arts, youth work, and special needs and marginalised group settings.
Artist in the Community has developed a menu of programmes to suit the needs of children young people and adults of all ages and abilities and can adapt or tailor make sessions to meet a clients curriculum needs, themes or programme of activities. All our school based workshops have an investigation, research, design and construction elements built in which encourage cooperation and personal expression, our children and young peoples programmes are designed to be child centred..
Our current workshops include:
- Junk Sculpture – creating creatures, machines and monsters from recycled materials
- Mosaics for both indoor and outdoor display
- Murals both permanent and movable
- Mask making tribal and carnival
- Totem poles
- Buddy walls raising awareness in the playground
- Banner and pendant making
- Drawing through music –for children and adults alike- mark making inspired by music and movement
- Folk art and craft
- Drawing and Painting/ Acrylic, watercolour, pastels and oils
- Creative writing and poetry
- ‘Active Art’ for toddlers incorporates exercise and movement with art.
All the artists employed by Artist in the Community are experienced and have up to date
Criminal Records Bureau checks as well as full public liability insurance.
Artist in the Community evaluates all its programmes and provides all clients with a fully illustrated report of the activity and a disc of images for your portfolio or display.
Artist in the Community’s Storytelling workshops are one of the most popular programmes we offer aimed at 3-10 year olds. Most of the tales are original stories written by Susan Warlock and are performed (in costume with puppets). Stories are often combined with a related art session.

About Susan Warlock –Artist (BA Hons First Class)
Susan has been a practicing artist for over thirty years; she regularly exhibits her highly detailed drawings and softly rendered paintings and unique soft sculptures across the North east of England both in Solo Exhibitions and with other artists from East Durham Community Artists Network (EDAN)
Many of her works explore the darker side of human nature and are influenced by Folktales, fairy stories, Children’s literature and artist such as Hans Bellmer, Robert Gober, Paula Rego, Kiki Smith and Annette Messager.
